The retail industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by shifting consumer behaviors, evolving store formats, and technological advancements. While macroeconomic uncertainty may lead some to tread cautiously, field service leaders who look beneath the surface can find substantial growth opportunities. From store openings and closures to digital transformations and automation, the coming year presents a dynamic landscape where proactive service providers can thrive.

Our latest webinar highlights six key retail trends that are shaping the demand for field services. By understanding these shifts and preparing accordingly, field service organizations can position themselves as strategic partners to retailers navigating these changes.

1. Fast-paced store openings and closures

According to Coresight Research, 15,000 store closures are projected for 2025, the highest since the pandemic. These closures create immediate opportunities for decommissioning services, including equipment removal, data wiping, and asset recovery. Simultaneously, retailers plan 5,800 new store openings, with Dollar General and Dollar Tree accounting for 1,300 locations. Both scenarios drive demand for technology deployment, from structured cabling and networking to point-of-sale systems and security infrastructure.

2. Mergers and acquisitions

Retail M&A activity is accelerating, particularly in the grocery and convenience sectors, where geographic expansion is essential. In 2025, Aldi plans to acquire 400 stores from Winn-Dixie, while 7-Eleven continues its expansion. These consolidations require significant technology integration work, including rebranding, point-of-sale standardization, and security system upgrades.

3. Digitalized in-store services and experiences

Retailers continue to invest in technologies that enhance the shopping experience, including self-service kiosks, mobile point-of-sale systems, and interactive displays. These digital transformations require robust wireless infrastructure and ongoing support. As stores become more connected, retailers are upgrading to Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 to support the increased bandwidth demands of these new systems.

4. Efficient store formats

The retail landscape is seeing its smallest average store size in 17 years at 3,200 square feet. Major retailers like Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Ikea are experimenting with these smaller, technology-intensive formats that maximize revenue per square foot while providing seamless customer experiences. These formats require advanced wireless networks for mobile POS and self-checkout, enabling a faster, more focused shopping experience.

5. Back office and autonomous retail operations

Traditional large-format stores continue to evolve into hybrid retail/fulfillment centers, requiring sophisticated automation systems. The shift supports growing e-commerce demands and enables more efficient inventory management, with microfulfillment capabilities serving both in-store and online customers. This transformation demands advanced robotics, RFID systems for inventory management, and enhanced networking infrastructure.

6. Frictionless asset protection

According to the National Retail Federation, retail losses from theft are projected to reach $140 billion in 2025. Retailers are implementing sophisticated protection systems that do more than prevent theft. Modern solutions combine AI-powered surveillance with valuable consumer analytics, requiring regular technology upgrades and maintenance.

What field service leaders can do next

The evolving retail landscape presents significant opportunities for field service organizations. To stay ahead, leaders should consider the following strategic actions:

Expand Decommissioning and Deployment Services: With a high volume of store openings and closures, field service teams should refine processes for swift technology removal and installation, ensuring minimal disruption to retail operations.

Strengthen M&A Support Capabilities: Retail acquisitions require extensive IT and security system integrations. Positioning your team as experts in rebranding and technology standardization can create long-term partnerships with growing retailers.

Invest in Digital Infrastructure Expertise: As retailers adopt advanced in-store technologies, field service providers should enhance their skills in Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, and connected retail solutions to meet increasing connectivity demands.

Optimize Support for Smaller Store Formats: Efficient, technology-heavy retail spaces need tailored field service solutions, including mobile POS support, self-checkout maintenance, and advanced networking capabilities.

Advance Automation and Robotics Services: Retailers are increasingly leveraging automation for inventory management and fulfillment. Training teams to install, maintain, and repair robotic and RFID systems will ensure relevance in this evolving space.

Enhance Security System Offerings: AI-driven surveillance and analytics will be a priority for retailers combating shrinkage. Providing installation and ongoing maintenance of smart security solutions can drive consistent service revenue.

Field service leaders who proactively align with these retail trends can position their organizations for sustained growth. By identifying key opportunities and investing in specialized capabilities, service providers can become indispensable partners in the retail sector’s ongoing evolution.

The field service industry shows signs of recovery after a challenging first half. While the sector weathered headwinds during H1, recent metrics paint an encouraging picture, highlighted by a 67% surge in technician job postings and expanding project pipelines for 2025.

Drawing from conversations with our network of field service leaders, we’ve identified these key trends shaping the industry.

First half challenges

Many companies experienced weaker-than-expected sales performance in the first half of last year. One field service executive said they were “personally just thankful that our year didn’t end in July.” However, momentum has shifted positively in recent months, with numerous organizations reporting upticks in project volume.

2025 project pipeline building

Participants noted that some projects lined up had been delayed and are now expected to ramp up in 2025. Specifically, industries like kiosks and point-of-sale deployments experienced delays, with expectations for a stronger Q4 and next year. According to industry research, the global kiosk market is projected to grow from $32 billion in 2024 to $57 billion by 2029, supporting the industry’s anticipation of increased deployments.

As one executive noted, “We’re seeing it wasn’t a huge upward trend in the back half of 2024, but rather products getting lined up for 2025 that we’ve been waiting on for months.”

Macroeconomic impacts

The projected slowdown partially stems from economic uncertainty, with some companies adjusting their expectations based on interest rates, funding availability, and general macroeconomic conditions.

According to a field service executive, project flow was “based on how easily money was flowing and if loans were given out. So it was more based on Wall Street than retail requirements.”

Some leaders noted losing projects due to clients opting for cheaper in-house solutions, reflecting tighter budgets and cost-saving measures. One field service leader expressed surprise at seeing a “large retailer not spending the money just to get things done right.”

While sales outlooks have improved, project win rates have not increased as dramatically. Some companies are refining their bidding strategies, focusing on selective, relationship-based proposals to increase margins and win rates.

According to one field service leader, we are “drilling down where our niche is and that value-add that we bring,” prioritizing quality partnerships over volume.

In the ever-changing retail industry, companies are constantly looking for ways to optimize operations and enhance customer experience. Point-of-sale (POS) continues to play a key role in helping businesses achieve these goals, emphasizing its importance in retail. In this blog, we’ll dive into several key data points that exemplify why this demand for POS services continues to grow.

1. Digital and mobile wallet payments are growing in popularity

One critical component to this surge in demand is the development of new POS features, such as mobile wallet and digital payments. Many smartphones have digital wallets that contain the necessary bank information to complete a transaction. This feature eliminates the need to carry around physical credit cards.

Mobile wallet and digital payments typically require new software and hardware installation. Installable equipment may include mobile payment terminals, card chip readers, barcodes, or receipt printers.

According to Capital One Shopping’s 2024 digital wallet report, digital and mobile wallets made up about 32% of global POS transactions, surpassing credit cards to become the most used payment method at checkout—a trend that continues to grow into 2025. Grand View Research predicts that by 2030, digital and mobile wallet payments will reach a market size of USD 51.53 billion. These POS features establish an easy and secure method of carrying out transactions, making them a preferred payment method among tech-savvy retailers and customers alike.

2. Companies continue to invest in self-checkout systems

A 74% increase in global self-checkout POS terminal adoption among retailers over the past two years reflects a major push for efficiency—but balancing that with high customer expectations remains crucial. With demands for faster, touchless checkout options, self-checkout continues to be a defining trend in retail automation.

3. Increased adoption of near field communication

Another trend making a splash in the world of POS is Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC is a POS method that carries out transactions through a quick and contactless communication between the POS device and credit card. By simply waving or tapping their smartphone or contactless card near the NFC system, consumers can quickly complete their transaction, cutting down on wait times and improving overall customer satisfaction. With consumers gravitating towards effortless and secure payment processes, NFC-enabled POS terminals are expected to only grow in popularity in the coming years.

4. Retailers will continue to implement high-quality POS systems

As the retail industry continues to evolve, companies are taking the necessary steps to adapt to changes to advance their positioning in the retail market. This means they’re looking to replace their existing POS systems to improve the overall customer experience.

According to reports, in 2025, 80% of retailers are prioritizing upgrades to their POS systems, underscoring a widespread commitment to enhancing customer experience through modernized checkout technology—especially as systems now often integrate inventory, CRM, and analytics to support faster, more personalized interactions.

Build a productive POS servicing team

Utilizing Field Nation to build a team of qualified POS technicians can help your company complete installation projects faster and more efficiently. You’ll be able to choose professionals you know you can count on, resulting in enhanced customer experiences and streamlined transactions for your retail clients.

The 50% rise in demand for POS services emphasizes the importance POS has in the retail industry. As companies continue to recognize the correlation between success and POS systems, service providers must be ready to dispatch their technicians and take on work.

Don’t miss out on the booming demand for POS services. Whether you are looking for more insight or interested in building your dream team of on-demand, high-quality technicians, connect with Field Nation to get started.

By Sam Eberhart and Jon Holm, Senior Business Development Managers at Field Nation

It’s no secret that technology is developing quickly, especially in the restaurant industry. Recent tech developments are making it easier for restaurants to streamline operations, enhance security, and improve customer experience.

After attending the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago and meeting with several industry leaders, we gained firsthand insights into the tech solutions that matter most to restaurant companies. In this blog, we’re highlighting two significant tech trends that field service companies should address and how Field Nation can help you meet these demands with confidence.

Surge in security demands

The security market is booming across industries, and the restaurant sector is no exception. According to the FBI, U.S. restaurants are the eighth-most likely place for Americans to be attacked, leading to a high demand for security solutions. Many restaurant owners we spoke to at the National Restaurant Association Show expressed concerns about rising theft and vandalism incidents. To improve security and protect customer safety, restaurants need enhanced security solutions, like cameras and access control systems.

Field Nation can help MSPs meet this demand with a network of skilled, indpendent security installation technicians. Our platform connects businesses with indepdendent technicians proficient in installing the latest security technology. By leveraging Field Nation, field service companies can offer their customers in the restaurant industry reliable, high-quality security services.

AI integration in restaurant technology

If it seems like the term “AI” is everywhere these days, you’re not imagining things. AI is becoming a crucial component of operations across various industries, and the restaurant industry is no exception. From AI-powered notetakers at service counters to predictive ad suggestions based on vehicle recognition at drive-through counters, it’s clear from our conversations with show attendees that this technology is revolutionizing the industry—and for good reason. According to Restaurant Technology News, AI-driven automation can significantly enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Networking and cabling are essential for implementing AI technology in restaurants. Advanced AI systems rely on complex infrastructure to function effectively, requiring a team of skilled IT experts for proper installation. With Field Nation, field service companies can access a labor marketplace of on-demand technicians with the skills necessary to install and maintain these systems. Leveraging on-demand labor can help you service your clients quickly and efficiently.

Talk to us about your field service needs

As restaurant industry leaders embrace these trends to keep their businesses secure and operations efficient, field service companies need to be ready to pivot quickly and meet these demands.

The past year and a half of post-COVID recovery has made one field service übertrend absolutely clear: The digitization of the customer experience, once a nice-to-have feather in the cap of ambitious retailers, has become a do-or-die necessity.

Retail is laser-focused on digitization for two primary reasons:

Reason #1: Ongoing labor crisis increases automation needs

First, the ongoing labor crisis has driven retailers to automate several aspects of the customer journey. Self-checkout technology eliminates disruptions triggered by staffing upheavals. Digital signage helps customers navigate the store without the aid of store attendants. IoT technology measures customer engagement in real-time, while upgraded security systems keep a better eye on inventory and store access without staff intervention.

Reason #2: Personalized shopping experiences require technology investment

The second factor behind the accelerating digitization trend is customer behavior, specifically the heightened drive for a personalized shopping experience. Young consumers, retail’s most coveted audience, want recommendations, cross-device functionality, and above all, a seamless experience. This degree of personalized, curated customer experience is impossible without the data that IoT technology provides through heat mapping, surveillance, and other data collection.

Connecting this novel retail technology and maximizing its efficacy translates into major cabling and networking infrastructure investments. This is apparent in YoY infrastructure growth patterns: The levels of YoY growth in networking and cabling post-COVID far exceed pre-COVID growth levels. Notably, work outside of this CX digitization trend (traditional POS, Desktop/Laptop) is not seeing the same acceleration of growth.

Retail field service leaders going into 2023

We’re seeing this strength of infrastructure work continue. However, there is some hesitancy in the market related to supply chain issues, a potential recession, and a lack of clarity over the staying power of omnichannel. When these factors stabilize (and they will eventually), retailers will exhibit more confidence in a wider array of tech investments. This is a key insight for service leaders planning for 2023.

From self-checkout technology to the ongoing multichannel transformation in retail, point-of-sale (POS) work is rising to meet the moment. Read about three of the biggest POS trends impacting the retail industry.

In the world of retail, point of sale (POS) represents the most dramatic recent shift in technological advancement. Several factors upended retail norms and pushed companies to keep shopping convenient.

Because POS devices are a crucial touchpoint for customers, they play an outsized role in maximizing this convenience. Read on for three key POS trends to look for and their expected impact on field service.

Self-checkout is becoming the new normal

Demand for field services related to self-checkout technology grew 42% in 2021, and this upward trajectory is expected to continue through 2022 and beyond.¹ In contrast, traditional POS work experienced slower growth at 14%.

The current labor shortage has accelerated this trend. Retailers are trying to keep customer satisfaction levels high as they struggle to attract and retain employees. Self-checkout helps retailers navigate this labor uncertainty and adjust to shifting customer expectations.

Changing expectations around cashless transactions are also driving the trend. A 2020 report from Mastercard revealed that 74% of customers want to continue using contactless payments even after the pandemic.

More devices mean more fiber and cabling work

In addition to self-checkout devices, mobile POS systems are increasingly popular among retailers looking to accommodate touchless payments. These devices offer additional functions like improved inventory management, which is another notable priority in the retail space.

This proliferation of devices makes the need for advanced wireless infrastructure immediate. Retailers who haven’t already will need to upgrade to fiber infrastructure. There will also be a sustained increase in the installation of low voltage data and voice cables.

The adoption of cloud-hosted POS solutions is expected to gain traction over the coming years. As of 2020, 52% of corporate retailers were already using cloud-based POS, with 40% more planning to adopt it.² This normalization of cloud-powered retail will require a boost in tech infrastructure.

POS will drive multichannel commerce

E-commerce is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s a necessity. What’s more, as customers embrace the convenience of e-commerce, they also expect a wide array of hybrid experiences, such as “buy online, pick up in-store” (BOPIS).

Accordingly, POS technology faces the growing need to integrate with third-party online shopping apps that enable multichannel commerce. This will also push retailers to make advancements in inventory management systems.

Want more insight on POS trends?

The field services industry is in the midst of a perfect storm. Demand is at an all-time high as clients invest in digital transformation. At the same time, the skilled labor shortage, rising pay rates, higher gas prices, and supply chain delays create persistent challenges for service delivery organizations.

But our customers’ challenges inspire us to innovate. We’re excited to share three of our latest innovations related to sourcing technicians, finding parts, and scaling to meet demand. These new features and capabilities will help our customers navigate market challenges and take advantage of opportunities.

1. Network enhancements to help find qualified talent faster

Over 1 million work orders have been completed on the Field Nation platform in the last 12 months, giving us a unique opportunity to understand the types of work and skill sets that are in demand.

This year, we’re analyzing millions of work orders to benefit technicians and service organizations. We’re using machine learning and natural language processing to break work into its component parts. Plus, we’re tapping into subject matter experts who specialize in each type of work. Our team is analyzing:

Required skill sets

Devices being worked on

Services being performed

OEMs, makes, models, tools, licenses, and locations

This analysis enhances how customers search for technicians, find pay rates, and align them to market rates. For example, instead of searching for broad categories like “point of sale,” customers can identify technicians who have experience installing or uninstalling “traditional point of sale devices” or “self checkouts.” Below, you can begin to see a more complete breakdown of these granular skillsets across point of sale (POS), cabling, and networking.

Our enhanced coverage discovery tools will help customers:

Now, as part of a beta release, customers will begin to see this data put to work in MarketSmart Insights. This pricing and coverage tool allows Premier users to see these more granular categories as they prepare an RFP response or create a plan for existing projects. Initially, we are focusing on three types of work: networking, point of sale, and low-voltage cabling.

In the second half of the year, customers will begin to see the new categories as they create work orders and templates. We will continue to complete this analysis across all types of work on our platform.

We also recognize that getting the required parts and materials on-site is more difficult than ever. Supply shortages, rising component prices, and logistics costs add to the challenge. As a result, many technicians source parts themselves, which can exacerbate delays and cost pressures.

To address these needs, we recently partnered with Graybar, a leading component, equipment, and materials distributor, on a beta program. As a part of this beta, technicians don’t need to source parts on an ad-hoc basis. Instead, Field Nation customers can order from Graybar’s library of 10,000+ parts and materials. Plus, customers can save up to 15% off of list price with our pre-negotiated pricing.

Through this partnership, the Field Nation team assists with planned procurement by shipping parts and materials directly to a job site or a technician. Our team handles all the details of getting parts and materials to the right location at the right time. Stay tuned for announcements regarding this offering’s official release.

We’ve also heard that some clients can’t keep up with the volume of on-site work. Our Platform Management Partner Program connects our customers to a a network of trusted partners who can support scoping work, vetting & confirming technicians for site, or reviewing deliverables.

These Platform Management Partners extend an organization’s capabilities without requiring additional headcount, and can scale up or down based on business needs. Customers can engage them for a single project, over a fixed period, or across their entire operation.

For example, Worldlink Integration Group, a provider of IT deployment services for retailers, works with a Field Nation Platform Management Partner for technician vetting, work order management, and dispatch management. By leveraging a Field Nation Platform Management Partner, Worldlink reduced the time spent on project coordination by over 80 percent. The partnership has helped Worldlink ramp up new clients more quickly, reduce errors, and focus on more value-added work.

Unlike other field service marketplaces, we continue to aggressively invest in the breadth and depth of our on-site IT network. The strength of our network and our continuous innovation help clients thrive despite today’s market challenges.

Introduction

ReSource Point of Sale (POS) is a restaurant and retail point-of-sale service and installation company operating in the United States – including Puerto Rico – and Canada. ReSource POS operates anywhere from 6am to 10pm, 7 days a week, with the exception of a few holidays. ReSource POS relies on Field Nation to fill coverage gaps.

Before Field Nation

ReSource POS had to search for technicians from third parties or use existing contacts. They had very limited reach, and the process of finding and dispatching technicians was very time-consuming. They had W2 technicians in Texas, Los Angeles, and Miami, but lacked coverage in other locations. And, ReSource POS had to go through Netsuite to talk to technicians, then relay information back to the client which wasted time and resources.

Improving efficiency with integrations

Saving time and resources is critical for the success of any business. ReSource POS found just that by integrating Autotask with Field Nation.

Through an API, Autotask and Field Nation share information and data in real-time. Technicians can upload photos to Field Nation, and end-clients can view those photos directly from Autotask. ReSource POS Clients can also view important pieces of information, like tracking information and closing notes entered into Field Nation from their Autotask portal. “Custom fields in Field Nation are also uploaded to Autotask, eliminating the need for our staff to retype closing notes, check-in/out information, RMA #s, or work order titles,” says Bill Wood, a Dispatch and Field services manager at ReSource POS. All of this information is synced in real-time, without data entry from employees. “We’re shaving minutes off of work orders, and when you’re doing hundreds a day that saves a ton of time,” says Wood. Instead of re-entering data or information from one system into the next, employees can focus on larger initiatives and growing the business. Plus, the end client loves the real-time feedback.

Curating a pool of quality technicians

A large concern when using contractors is accountability and reliability from the contract workers. ReSource POS uses Field Nation’s Talent Pools to build specific groups of high-quality technicians from the Marketplace. Using templates, ReSource POS is able to receive thorough feedback from end clients on technicians’ performance. And, ReSource POS has one convenient view of deliverables, photos, notes, tasks, and tickets. Having an overview of all active work and helps ensure accountability from technicians and dispatchers alike.

“It’s a huge bonus to see all of the data from technicians. We look at this to measure their performance and determine if we’ll use them again,” says Wood. “This is the easiest way for us to determine if someone has done a good job, the platform makes it so easy to view
deliverables, pictures, and tasks assigned.”

ReSource POS has more than 100 technicians in its Talent Pool so far, and the list just keeps growing. “When someone does excellent work we make sure to add them to our Talent Pool… we want to use the same technician as many times as possible, so our project managers can keep building on that relationship.”

The Field Nation difference

When asked why ReSource POS uses Field Nation Wood replied, “The people are awesome. Our account executive responds in minutes. Anytime I have an issue Field Nation steps in to help us find solutions fast. There’s no arguing back and forth – Field Nation just handles it.”

ReSource POS has worked closely with the sales, support, and integrations team at Field Nation to find creative solutions for any problems both inside and outside of the platform.

Conclusion

Wood has been in the industry for over 20 years and used platforms like Field Nation throughout. “We use Field Nation anywhere we need a technician where we don’t have one,” says Wood. “And, since integrating Autotask with Field Nation, we have saved significant time and resources. This helps our clients see updated information in real time without someone getting on the phone or typing an email – saving us thousands.”
