{"id":15988,"date":"2020-06-10T18:30:42","date_gmt":"2020-06-10T18:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fieldnation.com\/resources\/recovery-on-horizon\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T13:52:59","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T18:52:59","slug":"recovery-on-horizon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fieldnation.com\/resources\/recovery-on-horizon","title":{"rendered":"Field Intelligence: Market recovery on the horizon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Insights posted 6.10.20<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our latest Field Intelligence report, based on data from the Field Nation marketplace, builds more evidence of a field service market recovery across the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<a name=\"dramatic-increase-in-work-volume-highlights-continued-growth\" class=\"fldn-table-of-contents-anchor\"><\/a><h2 id=\"dramatic-increase-in-work-volume-highlights-continued-growth\"><strong>Dramatic increase in work volume highlights continued growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we stated in an <\/span><a href=\"\/insights\/gear-up-for-rebound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier Field Intelligence report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we believe that the low point of the market was in week 15 (the week of April 4), reflecting a broad slowdown caused by retail, restaurant, and other business closures. Since then, we\u2019ve seen a gradual increase in work order volume that has lasted eight weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-data-viz_r01v01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14001 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-data-viz_r01v01.png?_t=1591810630\" alt=\"Published and routing YoY Volume Growth\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In week 23 (the week of June 1), we reported a dramatic jump in activity, following week 22, which included the Memorial Day holiday. Marketplace volume was substantially higher than previous weeks and only two percent below 2019 levels.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We are seeing strong growth across the board, and in particular, with technology upgrades for retail stores and retail fulfillment providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<a name=\"geographic-trends-reflect-broad-expansion\" class=\"fldn-table-of-contents-anchor\"><\/a><h2 id=\"geographic-trends-reflect-broad-expansion\"><strong>Geographic trends reflect broad expansion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uptick in field service activity is not limited to just a few states. All 50 U.S. states have dramatically rebounded from their lows in week 15, and nearly half now show positive year-over-year growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-data-viz_r02v01-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14002 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-data-viz_r02v01-2.png?_t=1591810718\" alt=\"Volume by geography\" width=\"711\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve been closely tracking activity in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/248023\/us-gross-domestic-product-gdp-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest states in terms of gross domestic product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and all have shown marked improvements over the past several weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-table-viz_r01v01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14003 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1172-03_MKG_field-intelligence-table-viz_r01v01-1024x410.jpg?_t=1591813002\" alt=\"State GDP vs. Year-over-Year Volume Growth\" width=\"640\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, states with lower virus activity and those that re-opened earlier are among the first to recover. However, California, New York, and other states with stricter shutdowns are also rebounding from the market low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/insights\/gear-up-for-rebound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our definition of a market recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is five to seven weeks of consistent week-over-week growth as well as positive year-over-year growth. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lthough the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/08\/business\/economy\/us-economy-recession-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broader U.S. economy has likely been in a recession<\/a> since February<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a recovery appears to be close at hand for contingent field service labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Field Intelligence experts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/waelmohammed1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wael Mohammed<\/a>\u00a0has been in the IT services industry for more than 27 years. He has held leadership roles in both startups and large enterprises, including SPS Commerce, IBM, and Target. Wael is currently the Executive Vice President of Product at Field Nation, and oversees product management, product design, and data science. He is a master in identifying product and market growth opportunities, taking new products to market, and maximizing product performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/steve-salmon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Salmon<\/a>\u00a0brings more than 30 years of leadership experience to the IT services industry. He has held senior roles in both startups and large enterprises, even co-founding a technology services company in 1992, which was later purchased. Currently, Steve is the VP of Enterprise and Channel Sales at Field Nation. Previously, he served as SVP of Global Managed Services Solutions at CompuCom, where the services revenue grew from $200M to more than $1B.
