It takes many forms, and influences industries throughout the United States. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gigeconomydata.org\/basics\/how-many-gig-workers-are-there\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than a quarter of workers participate in the gig economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the gig economy to supplement your workforce is a popular technique, but some remain skeptical of gig workers\u2019 ability to meet their needs. If you are weary about common gig economy misconceptions, these facts might change your mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<a name=\"misconception-1-gig-work-includes-only-low-pay-low-skill-projects-suitable-for-people-who-cant-get-a-real-job\" class=\"fldn-table-of-contents-anchor\"><\/a><h2 id=\"misconception-1-gig-work-includes-only-low-pay-low-skill-projects-suitable-for-people-who-cant-get-a-real-job\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misconception 1: Gig work includes only low-pay, low-skill projects suitable for people who can\u2019t get a \u201creal job.\u201d <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong. Skill level of typical \u201cgigs\u201d is often very high. For example, a freelance electrician requires years of specialized training and practice and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.payscale.com\/research\/US\/Job=Electrician\/Hourly_Rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earns an average of $52,911 a year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This situation is no anomaly.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/i\/freelancing-in-america\/2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 93% of freelancers have skill-related education\/training and 79% have a college education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessnewsdaily.com\/7959-freelance-pay-rates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in most countries, freelancers earn higher wages than traditional workers. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than focusing on money, people choose to work as independent contractors to gain control and freedom over their career. They value the flexibility and lifestyle that comes along with gig work. Instead of sitting at a desk all day and taking direction from someone else, they get to be their own boss, travel more, and work remotely. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/i\/freelancing-in-america\/2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of gig workers say they would not return to their traditional job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even if the pay was higher. This could be attributed to the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/i\/freelancing-in-america\/2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77% of full-time freelancers said they have a better work-life balance, and 84% said they prioritize lifestyle over pay.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<a name=\"misconception-2-the-gig-economy-is-a-fad-driven-by-millennials\" class=\"fldn-table-of-contents-anchor\"><\/a><h2 id=\"misconception-2-the-gig-economy-is-a-fad-driven-by-millennials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misconception 2: The gig economy is a fad driven by millennial&#8217;s. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennial&#8217;s are only 4% more likely to participate in the gig economy. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/workplaceinsight.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/pwc-consumer-intellgience-series-future-of-work-june-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study conducted by PwC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 65% of workers ages 50+ strongly agree with having a \u201cstrong desire to work independently\u201d, versus a 29% agreement from workers ages 18-24. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gig economy is not going anywhere, with freelance labor growing faster than the overall U.S. workforce. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/hiring\/enterprise\/freelancing-america-2017-companies-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2014 to 2017, the gig economy outpaced the growth of the U.S. workforce at a rate 3x faster.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Plus, businesses around the globe rely on this market. <\/span><\/p>\n<a name=\"misconception-3-the-gig-economy-is-primarily-work-related-to-ride-sharing-apps-such-as-uber-and-lyft\" class=\"fldn-table-of-contents-anchor\"><\/a><h2 id=\"misconception-3-the-gig-economy-is-primarily-work-related-to-ride-sharing-apps-such-as-uber-and-lyft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misconception 3: The gig economy is primarily work related to ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft were revolutionary when they gained popular adoption and \u201cdisrupted\u201d whole industries. In the past few years, they even became standard in the transportation industry and streamlined processes that were once clunky and complicated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it is true that drivers for these businesses are considered gig workers.
